I'm sure I could have looked this up somewhere else, but I've often found that while a lot of software/products claim to use the video card to accelerate and theoretically can, there are usually many factors in getting that acceleration to actually work.
So, I'm asking here for an experienced answer from people who have such practical knowledge. What software packages, if any, can and do use the video card to accelerate the editing or en/de/trans-coding process? Adobe products? Some other lesser known product?
If I decide to really get into using the camera for video, at some point I may wish to get some professional software. From limited dealings in the past, I am convinced that using Apple hardware with Apple software (FCP) is going to yield the most consistently reliable experience. However, while I have no current/recent Apple hardware, I do own a fairly powerful PC I use mainly for gaming , E8400 with 4870x2. I would hate to "pollute" my gaming system, but I could add another drive or two in RAID and make it a dual boot for video editing as well.
