I bought the screen used off ebay and rewired it to a 12v battery pack (also ebay). The screen is mounted on an articulating ball joint from a car GPS unit. I'm using the A/V for the video signal so not as sharp as HDMI but the screen has good resolution. The screen makes focus a lot easier (works better indoors / low glare) and it cuts the camera screen so saves a ton of battery on the camera. It's nice to go hand held and have the screen point down for high shots too. The rig mounts nicely on a tripod / monopod or my shoulder rig which was purchased for $14 in China. The shoulder rig has a chest pad and body strap so is fully solid, if I hold my breath it looks like a tripod mounted shot it's so steady. All in all this rig cost me about $60.
I work for an NGO and currently in China working on a documentary about an earthquake recovery project, the 5D is performing amazingly. I mainly use three lenses, 50mm 1.8 FD prime, EF 24 - 105 and an old Canon FD 70 - 300 f5 with a nice smooth + big focus ring. I'm interested to hear from anyone else who is putting together DIY rigs for tips and tricks.
